We can't adequately describe how peaceful it is to listen to the birds & watch the sky turn purple over the Smoky Mountains at our "Backside" campground with 6 acres of complete solidarity. Evenings around the firepit w/ the stars are simply magical! Local activities include cliff jumping a secret swimming hole, hiking the Appalachian trail, & whitewater rafting the Nantahala River. There are 7 large tent campsites with 2 shared fire pits, a porta-potty, a fresh water creek, & picnic tables.

L-ispazju
NOTE: This is NOT an easy drive up car camp site. Guests must have 4x4 to access the campground and MUST arrive during the day so as to not get lost.

Our "Backside" campground features 7 "hike in" tent/hammock camping sites, with two communal fire pits, 2 communal picnic tables, and a communal Porta-Potty. A fresh water creek runs through the campsite for easy access to drinking water (though it's probably best to still either filter or boil it). The parking area is 50 ft from the access trail for easy load in and load out. This listing is for just ONE of the 7 sites, so there's a potential other campers will be at one or more of the other sites in the campground. NOTE: All but the last mile to the campsite is paved and easy access. BUT - the last mile of the access road is an unmaintained dirt/mud/gravel road that can be tricky to navigate - especially when we've had heavy rain, and when it's dark, therefore 4x4 is required as is DAYTIME arrival. No one is close by to offer assistance if you ignore this warning and you won't be able to call for help as there's no cell reception in the mountains. DO NOT book this site if you don't have 4x4! If you do have the proper vehicle and mindset - then it's one of the best, secluded, private, primitive campgrounds in the state!

On the 1 mile drive to the campground you'll pass by our distant cousin's "backwoods redneck junk" and excavation. It might feel like the haunting - but just continue on and after a few hundred feet you'll be in surrounded in nature on your way to the most peaceful campsite setting in the Smoky Mountains. We hope you'll embrace the chance to make new friends at the campground and enjoy this community experience - while still having tons of room to socially distance. You'll be sharing the Porta-Potty - so bring your own hand sanitizer and TP.

I'm currently serving in my 18th year of Active Duty Service to our great nation as a member of the United States Air Force. I am stationed at Langley, AFB in Virginia with my wife and 3 sons. We are sweating it out here in Virginia until I can retire and live part time in the Smoky Mountains of NC, and part time in Alaska! My ancestors have owned the land our NC cabins and campsites sit on since 1836. In fact, my mother grew up in a little rustic cabin on the side of a dusty road when there was no electricity and the outhouse was a hole in a bench placed over the creek. My grandfather even helped build Nantahala Dam after returning from WWII. I grew up exploring the mountains with my 2 brothers and our BB guns each time we went to visit Pop Pop Ferguson and Uncle Frank at our family reunions. In 2005 he deeded us a parcel of his land and we built our first cabin. Our 4 year old son Jack called it "Smawlie". We LOVE to escape the heat and go to the Smoky Mountains to play on the lake and hike the trails on our own property, and of course, the world famous ones that join them, namely the Bartram and the Appalachian Trails. As you come to explore the lake, the trails, the rivers, and the mountain roads you'll discover why our ancestors chose to settle here. In time we bought the remainder of Uncle Frank's land and in his honor built our second cabin and named it "Frank's Landing". In 2019 we purchased a true Tiny Home called "Little Red". Finally, inspired by the solar eclipse of 2017 and to accommodate the four-legged friends not allowed in the cabins, we opened "The Backside" - a beautiful campground featuring seven level tent sites next to a little fresh water creek on the Backside of our family mountain. In 2021 we hope to purchase a gorgeous Lake Front home to accommodate more of our growing family. When we were stationed in Alaska for 6 heavenly years - we saved our pennies and the PFD and purchased a remote parcel of property outside of Cantwell and have slowly begun to develop it. We hope to build a cabin there someday. In the mean time - it's the PERFECT RV camping spot, aptly named "Denali View". Thanks for reading this little tidbit about us. As you can see, our family has truly been blessed. We love the outdoors and are excited to share our property with you. We hope you love it as much as we do. It's the perfect place to "disconnect - in order to reconnect".
