The largest stone fort ever built in the United States! In September of 2011, Fort Monroe was the last active U.S. Army fort to be protected by a moat when it closed as a military base. On November 1, 2011, the fort was proclaimed Fort Monroe National Monument, the 396th addition to the National Park Service.
